School for Urban Studies

CANactions is the educational platform, our mission is to enhance the creation of places and communities in Ukraine where people love to live and work. We integrate the most relevant world experience in the sphere of architecture and urbanism to educate and inspire responsibly active change makers.

At the present moment the great social demand has been triggered for principled reform of existing relationships between citizens and other actors (business, government authorities, professionals) which shape our everyday life in different dimensions – from cultural to spatial. This has immediately led to the questions – ‘Who are those change-makers which could moderate the process of building new types of connections in Ukrainian cities?’ and ‘What tools and approaches do they need to be able to successfully deal with complexity of the current challenges?’

All of these issues have become a starting point for establishing  CANactions School for Urban Studies.

Throughout the year various open educational events are held as a part of  СANactions Public Program.

CANactions International Architecture Festival — the largest architectural event in Ukraine, runs annually since 2008.

Education program

CANactions School for Urban Studies is an experimental educational institution, based in Kyiv, Ukraine. Our programs are based on the exploration of Ukrainian cities, identifying concepts and defining actions for urban development – on strategic as well as tactical levels.

The School key principles are

  • an interdisciplinary approach
  • experiential learning based on teamwork
  • case study methodology
  • orientation on strategic thinking
  • integration of the most relevant world experience in the sphere of urban development, design and planning into Ukrainian context.
The School is aimed at preparing change makers who are skilled to research complex urban environment(s) and elaborate strategic vision as well as tactical measures for its improving and development.

The CANactions education program is designed for:

  • civil servants of Ukrainian regional agencies for urban development
  • open-minded executives of Ukrainian cities administrations
  • activists, representatives of NGOs aimed at urban projects for real transformation of Ukrainian cities
  • urban entrepreneurs with strong interest in city development projects
  • young professionals from the field of urban planning, architecture and city engineering, who have 2-3 years of work experience and strong interest in Integrated Urban Development
  • critically-thinking intellectuals with background in economics, political and cultural studies, journalism, sociology, ready to actively participate in the Integrated Urban Development of their cities
  • researchers, interested in the exploration of the Global South urban conditions and Ukrainian context in particular.

After finishing the School, CANactions graduates are given the possibility to:

  • implement their own projects supported by CANactions
  • participate in urban development programs initiated by Ukrainian and European partner organizations
  • conduct research projects in Ukraine and abroad
  • become interns and employees in leading European bureaus and companies focused on urban design architecture, spatial and strategic planning, and urban studies

The program is focused on the adaptation of EU urban development policies to the specific scale and real-life functioning of Ukrainian mid-sized cities. This is a practical course created for young professionals who lack the methods and tools of research-oriented design and strategic planning.

Such cities as Zhytomyr, Poltava, Vinnitsa and Chernivtsi – as well as their connections with the surrounding settlements – will become the Program’s case studies.

Within the framework of the School year fall 2015 / spring 2016 we launched a research program which is focused on exploration of different typologies of Ukrainian places – from historical cities to rural areas – and development of innovative proposals and strategies for their future development.

The course is designed as a series of four discrete STUDIOS, built around a particular theme. With each STUDIO a new group of students is selected.

  • Intensive two weeks introduction course for NGO-representatives "ACTION TOOLKIT: WORKING IN URBAN DEVELOPMENT FIELD"

The Advanced Professional Training is designed to broaden the scope of knowledge about up-to-date trends and practices in urban development for the interdisciplinary group of working professionals, engaged in NGO activities in the cities of Eastern Ukraine, as well as to equip them with the tools of implementation of those approaches in their hometowns (data and stakeholder analysis, tactical urban design, methodology of successful practices, effective teamwork, communication etc).

The course will be conducted in two parts as a full-time interlinked modular system, performed in Kiev and one of the cities in Eastern Ukraine. The training will be delivered through intensive full-time 6-day sessions.

FIRST SESSION: 28.02 - 04.03.2017, Kiev.
